Mama’s Boy (2024)

Synopsis

Mama’s Boy (2024) is a Filipino dramatic film that weaves a tale of remorse and healing while also focusing on a family’s core structure and fabric. The film centers on Glen, a young man whose father, Mauro, left him with deep emotional wounds. After years of self-destructive anger and emotional chaos, Glen embarks on what he believes is a closure-giving quest.

Glen’s plan involves turning over a new leaf and reaching out to members of his father’s new family. He starts to build a connection with his stepmother Lorraine and his Aunt Leilanie. At first, his engagement with them seems to be a carefully orchestrated scheme to deal emotional damage on the father who abandoned him. It appears that he wants to shatter Mauro’s family by charming and manipulating them in the most painful ways.

However, Glen’s journey in the film leads him to confronting unanticipated realities. What appears to be a quest for vengeance gradually transforms into an emotional awakening. The bonds he assumes he’s in control of ultimately reveal different aspects of him, and challenge his perceptions of the people around him.

Glen’s world is turned upside down with a sudden, shocking revelation. He has to face his father’s past blunders, alongside his own, as well as what he is today. The story challenges us with this question: is it possible to heal our own hurt by inflicting pain on others, or does it simply make the hurt deeper?

Acero Films has a new offering, “Mama’s Boy”, a one-of-a-kind film that centers around human feelings. It is directed by Paul Michael Acero from a film he also co-wrote. Acero’s unique style actually allows one to witness the raw emotion throughout the film which, in turn, allows the viewers to connect with the characters of the film which is one of the reasons the film is set in not only the family genre but in the deeply felt genre as well. This allows the film to invoke feelings of realism and an overall emotional depth.

A theme around familial and emotional healing arises, which is human nature as a whole. Lack of control with one’s emotions is a severe topic of discussion throughout the film. Many people struggle with anger issues, and in this film, the spectrum of anger is one of the key driving forces that help the film and its characters to keep moving forward. Glen, one of the key characters in the film, aims to put his father, who has put him through an emotional rollercoaster, through emotional pain which in such from his perspective seemed like real payback not adequate payback as he learned the hard way and lost control of his anger throughout the film.

This allows one to witness the deep reflection on one’s moral and ethical actions. Glen aims to provide control which gradually leads him to realize that emotion is not simple and the people he ‘helps’ reveal a whole new realm to kindness, understanding, and forgiveness.

Romantic, familial and species all interrelate together to build the multi faceted spectrum of relationships and the film urges one to think more deeply about. Once Legato is reached can one truly heal from the pain and scars that the ‘past’ is deeply and deeply rooted.

The film Mama’s Boy tells the story of the relationship between a father and a son’s skewed understanding of dependence. It highlights the father’s addiction to heroin and the son’s journey of unhealthy dependence and trying to help his father. Furthermore, Mama’s Boy exposes the realities of addiction without glamorizing it, and casting a father-son relationship in a new light, as the son constantly processes his father’s addiction between his love for the father and his disgust toward the addiction. The film is thoughtful and reflective in a way that gives space for viewers to appreciate thoughtful storytelling throughout the film.
