Synopsis
“Geçen Yaz” which translates to “Last Summer” is a Turkish film that came out in 2021. Like many other coming-of-age films, “Last Summer” focuses on the romance and the juxtaposing trial of growing up. “Last Summer” is directed by Ozan Açıktan and explores the bittersweet realm of first love, intimacy and the self-identity struggles which occur during the twilight of youth, all set in a small, picturesque coastal town in Turkey.
As with many other coming-of-age films, Last Summer centers around a teenage character: 16-year-old Deniz, who with his family, spends the summer vacation at the family coastal retreat. Like every other year, Deniz goes to the same seaside town every year to meet with his old friends and do old things. This year, however, things are different. This year is more complicated, more emotional and ultimately, transformative.
Much like any other teenage boy, Deniz, who is on the verge of becoming a man, is carrying a “Disney” view of love and hence, wishes to experience his first ever truly romantic encounter. This shift in his reality comes in the form of Aslı, a teenage girl who is a little older than him and also happens to share the same love for the coastal town. Aslı is confident, emotionally closed-off, yet enigmatic and therefore the blend of fascinating yet challenging to Deniz.
As summer kicks in, Deniz emotionally connects with Aslı, and a strong bond begins forming in silence. In moments, the two are able to share warm feelings with the fragile and undefined bond they share. Uncertainty stemming from Aslı’s strengthened and complex feelings, their youthful feelings, and shifting group dynamics all work to keep their bond undefined and frail.
Similar to the group, everyone goes through the messy cooking of adolescence. Dancing, making out, and telling their secrets under moonlight while being confronted by authority figures. A mix of Asli’s independence with Aries mixed with the flirtatious and Deniz’s mix of unmatched confidence and overwhelming insecurities creates misunderstandings and tense clashes.
The older adults in the story, parents and their relatives, gaze into their children with a blend of concern and nostalgia. Coming to terms with the fact that the children are undergoing the defining moments of their lives. While there is a hint of youthful aloofness, the growing gap hints at their turning into adults.
Shifts arise as summer is about to end. Increasing emotional fragility, jealousy, and miscommunication causes the rift between Aslı and Deniz. The romance is bitterly idealized and painful to wake up of. Deniz’s quiet, melancholic self-reflections mark the end of the journey. Unlike the typical romance story, he does not end up getting the girl, however, he gains something deeper: a more sophisticated grasp of himself as well as the emotional intricacies of other people.
Last Summer is the story of everyone. It elegantly portrays growing up without relying on self-centered, shocking plots. Rather, it encapsulates the fleeting beauty of youth, the ache of first heartbreak, and timeless growing up.

IMDb Ratings & Last Summer Review
The film has a mixed to a 5.9/10 rating on IMDb with 6.1 but the audience who has watched the film claim to appreciate the more subtle slope of character development as compared to ‘in your face’ high stakes drama that seems to be the norm in a majority of films.
Critical Analysis:
Visual Style: The film captivates the viewer’s imagination. The Director Ozan Açıktan together with the cinematographer Burak Kanbir uses natural light, the golden hour, and beautiful seas during the summer to accentuate the film’s themes. The camera stays on faces and settings to capture the emotional nuances.
Tone and Pacing: The narrative progresses at a calm, deliberate pace. The film lacks loud peaks and intense clashes and instead, focuses to build a calm, reflective tone to let the viewer savor the emotional texture of every moment. While some towards the slower pacing appreciate this quality for its stark realism, others may find it too slow and boring.
Emotional Authenticity: Last Summer is remarkable in the sensitive and nuanced rendering of the adolescent emotions. The challenges and quiet successes that Deniz faces along his journey make for a youthful experience that is laden with emotional, poignant relatability.
Themes: The themes of the film include emotional and identity, the reality and a fantasy of childhood, and the loss of purity part of one’s life. Aslı is shown as emotionally grown and independent and Deniz’s inability to differentiate the physical attraction from emotionally understanding adds the subtle commentary on gender dynamics.
Music and Sound Design: The film employs a simple yet impactful soundtrack to highlight emotional moments. Ambient sounds like the gentle breeze and the lapping of waves immerse the viewer in the world the characters inhabit.
Conclusion
