Synopsis
Released in 2023, Animal is an action drama film produced in India, under the direction of Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Vanga is known for psychlogical dramas Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy. Vanga takes his audience deep into the the murky waters of toxic masculinity, emotional trauma, violence, emotional violence, and the ever-growing problem of dysfunctional families in Animal. Focusing on the emotionally heated bond between a father and son, the film is filled with intense action.
Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Ranvijay “Vijay” Singh, Animal tells the story of a man shaped by a lifetime of emotional trauma and neglect. Balbir Singh, in Anil Kapoor’s portrayal, is a stoic father and an emotionally cold figure, who leads the family with silence and distance. Balbir’s son, Vijay, grows up in the persistent hope of earning his father’s love, and the deep nurturing father son bond he desires. But his hopes are only met with indifference, emotional rejection, and harsh criticism.
The story focuses on the father-son relationship. Balbir is described as an emotionally distant father, a disciplinarian, and a powerful patriarchal industrialist. His son, Vijay, is sensitive, emotionally traumatized, and an internalizer. Over time, his personality splits and he becomes two different people: on one side, a loving and passionate man who craves tenderness and connection; on the other side, a violent and ragefully unstable man.
The emotionally driving trauma of the story is a Vijay’s father’s neglect who creates a deeply rooted wound of never being “seen.” This affects the way he forms bonds, particularly, his girlfriend Geetanjali “Geetu” (Rashmika Mandanna) who becomes a few stabilizing anchors in his turbulent life.
With the story progressing, Vijay is sucked into a rampant world of gangsters, political machinations, and revenge. At the same time, he has to reckon with his identity and the self-destructive patterns that he has lived with. The title Animal encapsulates both the metaphorical and literal interpretation of the beast within shaped by his emotional scars and rage.
The film ends in a tragic healing explosion of violence. It’s more than just revenge or redemption; it is more of a metamorphosis. Vijay now has a choice of either confronting his own demons in a fight to reclaim his dignity or succumbing to his broken state that society and family has branded him with.

The film’s arc captures his transformation from a young man yearning for approval and later evolving into an extremely volatile and dangerous man, and this is captured with raw intensity.
Anil Kapoor as Balbir Singh

Rashmika Mandanna as Geetanjali
Rashmika Mandanna as Geetanjali portrays the character with a combination of strength and emotional transparency. As Vijay’s partner, she embodies empathy, love, and the potential of healing. Her character is morally sound and constantly petitions Vijay to overcome his self-destructive tendencies.
Triptii Dimri (in a special role)
Triptii’s role enriches the character’s emotional layer and mystery in the second part of the film. Her character marks a turning point in Vijay’s internal transformation and external struggles.
Bobby Deol (as Antagonist)
Bobby Deol portrays an antagonist that is both enigmatic and sinister with a role that is short in duration but notable. His fight with Vijay in the climax is savage as well as symbolic—of two shattered souls standing as rivals on a moral battleground.
Themes and Symbolism
A single animal os several different layers:
Toxic Masculinity and Emotional Repression: Vijay’s violent outbursts is the result not of an intrinsic darkness, but rather years of emotional neglect. The film is an indictment of the detached masculinity as well as an inquiry into the harm it causes, particularly in a patriarchal society.
Unexpressed affection or love, coupled with unresolved conflict, is a reasoning that the film exemplifies in a father-son relationship and how it can dictate a man’s fate.
The “animal” side of Vijay is both a curse and a symbol of strength. The film raises the question of whether it is possible to tame him or whether certain traumas go too deep to heal.
Beneath the layers of Violence and Fury, the film encapsulates love—be it romantic, familial, or even friendship—portraying it as a redeeming force that delivers a pathway to the dark side.
